Western Union Honors 25 Filipino Migrants as Heroes for Better

After months of searching for Filipino migrants who had made an outstanding difference in making a positive impact in the community, The Western Union Company (NYSE:WU), a leader in global payment services, announced the top 25 Filipino migrants who are living proof that Filipino migrants are indeed our modern day heroes.

Western Union had deemed it important to recognize heroic efforts of Filipino migrants, to affirm their invaluable contribution to their families, communities and the country. These migrants did not just send money back home; they had also given pride to the Filipino community with their successful missions.

The “Heroes for Better” campaign celebrates the lives of migrant Filipinos, their work and their personal advocacies because they were the ones who were courageous enough to run after their dreams and to take it further by fulfilling other people’s dreams,” shares Patricia Riingen, Senior Vice President, South East Asia & Oceania, Western Union. “The campaign does not just recognize and tell their stories, it also provides them a platform to inspire others to pay it forward.

The 25 heroes are Eddie Vega, Nestor Puno, Nilo Beltran, Adelaida Saito, Edmond Corpuz, Nanette Carillo, RJ Garcia, Agnes Granada, Mauro Oreta, Vangie Jorquia, Consorcia De Leon-Scholtz, Jay Jaboneta Vincent Benares, Edna Dorado, Mary Jane Al Mahdi, Hengie Taton, Mario Balboa, Alexis Belonio, Benette Cueto, Julieta Solas, Armand and Bing Serrano, Judith Gonzales, Nilda Cochrane, Cecilia Cech, and Asma Vilmonte.

“I guess it holds true for all of us heroes that it started with an issue that had affected us and it simply compelled us to take action. It’s not that we wanted to change the world, we just wanted to help in our own way,” says Nestor Puno.

“This recognition given to us by Western Union only inspires us to continue and even extend the reach of our advocacies, involve more people, and hopefully influence other migrants to start their own missions too,” adds Nilo Beltran.

Western Union will award USD25,000 to support the advocacy of the highest-voted hero. People can vote for their favorite hero by logging on to www.wuheroesforbetter.org.

Voting closes on September 28, 2015 at 11:50pm.

Dulaang UP: King Lear | Haring Lear

Dulaang UP’s second offering for its 40th Theatre Season is William Shakespeare’s King Lear and its new Filipino translation by Nicolas Pichay, Haring Lear. The play, considered by critics as Shakespeare’s greatest tragedy, is directed by DUP Founding Artistic Director, Professor Emeritus Tony Mabesa.

The play is set in the waning years of a Southeast Asian kingdom replete with appropriate music, movement, costumes, and properties of the region without losing the themes, images, and poetry of the playwright’s supreme achievement. King Lear | Haring Lear is the epitome of how deceit and the love for the superficial can tragically bring families to ruin and great kingdoms to ashes.

The star-studded cast includes Joel Lamangan, Leo Rialp, Jojo Cayabyab, Jacques Borlaza, Jeremy Domingo, Guelan Luarca, Frances Makil-Ignacio, Gilleth Sandico, Micaela Pineda, Martha Comia, and Astarte Abraham to name a few.

The artistic staff is composed of Ohm David (set design), Eric Pineda (costume design), Meliton Roxas Jr. (lighting design), Jethro Joaquin (sounds design), Arnel Paguyo (property design), Jeremy Dela Cruz (movement & choreography), Patrick Ortaliza and Juan Gonzales(dramaturgy) and John Mark Yap (assistant direction).

King Lear | Haring Lear runs from October 7 to October 25, 2015 at the Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theater, 2nd Floor, Palma Hall, U.P. Diliman. The Green Inferno: Fear Will Consume You

I'm not really into cannibal type of films but I'd love to give this one a try. I've seen the trailer in cinemas and it looks interesting. I've seen Apocalypto and Saw was able to "somehow" handle it. I'm pretty sure I can handle this one too. *cross fingers*

If you're into such films, I'm sure you'll gonna love this! Watch the trailer and see for yourself:

After more than a year of waiting, horror movie fans will finally get to see perhaps the most disturbing, and controversial films of the year—THE GREEN INFERNO.

Ahead of its US release, Solar Pictures unleashes the Green Inferno in local cinemas nationwide beginning September 23, 2015.

Directed by Eli Roth, the horror mastermind behind such groundbreaking films as Cabin Fever and the blockbuster Hostel franchise, Green Inferno is a terrifying, twisted and blood-soaked take on the a digital-age phenomenon known as “slacktivism.”

The Green Inferno tells the story of what happens when “slacktivism”—the well-meaning social-media response to global catastrophes—turns deadly deep in a South American rainforest.
When a group of college students take their humanitarian protest to the Amazon jungle, they are taken prisoner by the indigenous tribe they came to save. Trapped in a remote tribal village, these naïve, technology- dependent students suffer unspeakable acts as the victims of chilling and soul- destroying rituals reserved for only the most threatening intruders.

In early 2012 Eli Roth was working on a script about a group of college students who try to solve the world’s problems by using online videos to publicly embarrass anyone they see as doing wrong. Before he finished writing it, an organization called Invisible Children made the video “KONY 2012,” which urged viewers to help take down Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony.

Fueled by a worldwide social-media frenzy, the video was viewed more than 100 million times. Soon, however, the campaign came under intense criticism for oversimplifying—and in some cases misrepresenting—a complex situation, and the organization’s founder, Jason Russell, suffered a very public breakdown.

Roth was amazed that these real-life events so closely mirrored the central premise of The Green Inferno.

Everyone in the world was tweeting about something they had learned from a YouTube video, and almost shaming other people into re-tweeting it, as if you were uncaring about Ugandan child soldiers if you didn’t,” he recalls. In the end, the KONY 2012 campaign did almost nothing to solve the problems it highlighted. Yes, it raised awareness, but just re-tweeting links to YouTube videos isn’t actually going to stop warlords.

For Roth, the controversy surrounding KONY 2012 validated The Green Inferno’s core conceit—the idea that “slacktivism” is often just a way for social media users to feel like they are doing something about horrific events that are completely beyond their control. “It came from a good place, wanting to help others in a far corner of the world,” says Roth. “But ultimately it was more about people feeling better about themselves.”

Although the film offers a pointed commentary on this uniquely 21st-century trend, Roth’s primary goal is more visceral: to share with audiences his love for blood- curdling movie mayhem. “Horror movies were my passion growing up, and my favorite thing was being scared and watching scary, gory movies with my friends,” he says. “I love to terrify people. As things get worse in this world, and people feel a loss of control over things, they need an outlet, a place they are allowed to be really scared. Where better than in a horror movie?”

Guide to Buying Tickets For Les Miserables in Manila

After seeing Miss Saigon, The Phantom of the Opera, and Wicked, Les Miserables is one of the musicals I have been wishing they’d bring in to Manila. And just few days ago, all theater fanatics have received the best news of the week! Finally, it is happening! Few months from now, Manila audience will be witnessing one of the longest running musicals in the theater world. And what’s even exciting is that, our very own Rachelle Ann Go, will be flying back and joining the Australian cast as Fantine! Oh yes!

Following the footsteps of Lea Salonga, Rachelle Ann Go made waves in the West End scene as she wowed the audience with her portrayal of Gigi in the 2014 production of Miss Saigon in London. Since then, she started getting recognitions including Best Featured Actress (Broadway World UK/West End Awards), Best Supporting Actress (WhatsOnStage Awards). After getting noticed, she was then offered the role of Fantine in 2015.

Here's a sneak peek of her performance as Fantine in Les Miserables:

WATCH: Rachelle Ann Go is definitely conquering the West End stage! After her successful stint as Gigi in the 2015 production of Miss Saigon, Rachelle Ann Go is back as Fantine in West End's Les Miserable. Here's her version of "I Dreamed A Dream" performed at the recently concluded West End LIVE held at Trafalgar Square.
